Notes from Gartner Cloud Computing and SaaS Webinar

Brett Young from Collaboration Tech just posted some notes from a recent Gartner Webinar on SaaS and Cloud Computing.

Discussion topics include:
  • Cloud Computing
  • Cloud Computing Models
  • Risks of Cloud Computing
  • Common Cloud Computing Use Cases
  • Software as a Service
  • Upsides to SaaS
  • Downsides to SaaS
  • Four Things to Do Today
  • Gartner Recommendation

You can check out the details for each topic in the article. One of the interesting points in Upsides to SaaS was how IT can use to pay for SaaS through operating budget instead of capital budget. I was thinking for why this change was happening and came up with:
  1. The month to month biz model automatically places it under operations.
  2. Costs are low enough that larger long-term capital spending isn't needed, of particular note in today's economy.
  3. From costs being lower, another side benefit being potentially less internal approvals needed.

Probably #1 is the driver, with #2 & 3 additional support for the move.

We will also be presenting a webinar on SaaS of special relevance to SMBs. The webinar, titled "SaaS Vendor Selection" will be presented by Rusty Weston, ex head of Information Week Research. We have also created a whitepaper to go with the webinar on the same subject. Anyone who is interested can register for free @ http://www.hyperoffice.com/saas-reviews-for-smbs/
